What Is the Oxford Test of English (OTE)?

The Oxford Test of English (OTE) is an internationally recognised English proficiency test developed by Oxford University Press, one of the world's most respected publishers. In line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the OTE measures your English at B1 (Intermediate), B2 (Upper-Intermediate) and C1 (Advanced) levels.

The OTE is a modern test taken entirely on computer. It covers the four core language skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Because each module is scored separately, you can see your strengths and weaknesses clearly.

The Oxford Test of English is a trusted English proficiency certificate accepted by thousands of universities, institutions and employers around the world.

OTE Exam Format and Modules

The Oxford Test of English consists of four modules and takes about 2 hours in total. Each module assesses a different language skill:

Module Time Tasks / Questions Skills assessed
Speaking ~15 minutes 4 tasks Pronunciation, fluency, grammar, vocabulary
Listening ~30 minutes ~30 questions Listening comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding detail
Reading ~35 minutes ~35 questions Reading comprehension, vocabulary, text analysis
Writing ~45 minutes 2 tasks Written expression, grammar, coherence, style

The Speaking Module

In the OTE Speaking module, your voice is recorded through a microphone and assessed by computer. Tasks include describing pictures, talking about a topic and answering questions. The assessment criteria are pronunciation, fluency, use of grammar and range of vocabulary.

The Listening Module

In the OTE Listening module, you listen to recordings on a range of topics and in different accents. Across contexts such as everyday conversations, academic presentations and phone calls, it tests your ability to identify the main idea, find detail and make inferences.

The Reading Module

In the OTE Reading module, you read different types of text (articles, emails, notices, academic texts) and answer a variety of question types. It measures reading comprehension, vocabulary, identifying the main idea and interpreting detail.

The Writing Module

In the OTE Writing module, you are usually asked to write an email and an essay. You are assessed on grammatical accuracy, range of vocabulary, coherence, organisation and task completion.

CEFR Levels in the OTE

The Oxford Test of English places your English between B1 and C1 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages):

B1 - Intermediate

At this level you can communicate in English in everyday situations. You can express yourself when travelling, shopping and in simple work conversations. You can write short texts on familiar topics and understand the main idea.

B2 - Upper-Intermediate

This is the level required for most university and job applications. You can communicate comfortably with native speakers, understand complex texts and write detailed pieces. It is sufficient for academic English and professional communication.

C1 - Advanced

At this level you can use English to a high standard in academic and professional settings. You can understand long, complex texts and speak fluently and naturally. It is sufficient for academic research, senior-level business correspondence and writing complex texts.
